We had a fabulous Community Volunteering Day at York House Community Gardens – achieving much more than we’d ever hoped. 35 adults and 6 children came – and it was lovely to see people from all ages there. Amazingly, the area by the path near the netting is now clear of rubbish and ivy, and ready to be made into an attractive woodland bed; other rubbish around the community gardens has been barrowed into the enormous skip that we were able to hire with some of the money from the MK Community Foundation grant that Jane Wolfson ‘s bid has brought us; Hannah Giles and her friends and some other volunteers were weeding the flower beds; Karen and Linda have sorted out the annoying netting that we kept on tripping over; Harry, Colin and Mark M brought wonderful power tools and worked hard with them; work was done on the 2nd dead hedge, and Andy M is coming back to work on that; Kate and Misia’s children are transforming a discarded wheelbarrow into a herb bed; The sun shone, and it was lots of fun, as well as hard work!

We celebrate four local beer brewers: Hornes, The Grid Project, Bucks Star and Blackened Sun, plus Caribbean food from DRKDSH and pizzas from The Little Oven of Joy. York House’s bar will offer wines, prosecco, cider and soft drinks. Stony Radio’s DJs will provide a variety of music, and there will be an open session in the Beechey Room in the evening when you can come along with voice and/or non-electric instrument to join in. Following a structural survey, we have been advised to close one of the rear extensions to York House. This housed “The Space” and an upper floor storage room.
Activities in the main building will continue as usual, although a few groups and events will be relocated to different rooms from their norm.
Visitors will see cones around the side pathway, but the rear entrance and grounds are still Ok to use for now.
AVAILABLE SPACE ALERT
One way of supporting the town’s own community centre is to become a member. Membership is free and open to anyone aged 18 years or over who has an MK11 postcode or a strong association with the town.
We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee with charitable objectives, the building and grounds are owned wholly by our members.
Members receive regular newsletters, are informed of our activities and are entitled to come to all members meetings such as the AGM. Members help to decide the future of York House Centre. Members elect the Trustees / Directors who run the centre and are entitled themselves to stand for election. An increased membership can help increase support from grant providers and official organisations to sustain and develop the centre.

Not everyone knows that York House Centre is owned by the community of Stony Stratford – YOU!
It’s a registered charity, a business registered with Companies House, and it is run by a volunteer management committee, and its main role is to hire out space for a great variety of community, arts, self-help, small commercial, private party, and charity groups and individuals.
Many of the activities in York House depend on volunteers, eg for the community larder/warm space, gardening and horticultural, stewarding town events such as Christmas Lanterns and Arts4All, and helping with coffee mornings or bar work for our many music and arts events.
