Community Projects

Community Gardens

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic and onwards Stony in Bloom volunteers have been looking after the plots in the Community Gardens at the back of York House, growing vegetables for the King’s Foodbank.

For the last three years from May to October they have been able to send several boxes of veg per week to one of the few Foodbanks in MK that distributes fresh produce to those in need.

The project continues to flourish and expand, and, for several years, we have attained a Level 5 (Outstanding) award in the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ scheme for community gardening.

Christmas Lantern Project

Every year in November a number of workshops, including one at York House, are held by volunteers who support local children to make Christmas Lanterns which are paraded at the Town’s annual Christmas Light Switch On.

On the day of the Lanterns, the Children and their families assemble at York House with their Lanterns for a safety briefing at 4pm and the procession before moving off at 4.15pm and parading to the Market Square in time for the switching on of the Christmas lights at 5pm.

There is generally live music in the car park and mulled cider for the grown-ups and juice boxes and crisps for the children with any profits made from the sale of refreshments being used to fund future Lantern Projects.

The Lanterns Group are a not-for-profit and endeavour to make it as affordable as possible to make a lantern and join in, so are grateful for financial contributions from local businesses and organisations including Stony Stratford Town Council and Stony Stratford Business Association.
